Health Minister Rona Ambrose said Monday that the co-payments will be removed from the new national health insurance plan when it goes into effect Jan. 1, 2017.
Ambrose said that she and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will have a meeting with insurers to discuss how to ensure co-pays are phased out as quickly as possible.
“We’ll have a full discussion with them on that and how to move forward,” Ambrose told reporters.
Ambrose made the announcement as the federal government prepares to begin phasing out Medicare’s co-contributory payments as part of its $2.2-billion plan to phase out the program by the end of 2019.
